Yes, that’s how cold it got over the weekend, and the countryside was turned into a winter wonderland of sparkling white

With frost thicker than the thickest frost I’ve ever EVER seen!

And me bundled up in my warmest hat and scarf, and some big thick gloves that I borrowed from my daddy xo

It was time once again for my favourite routine from home- the big charity sale that’s held in the grounds of one of the local country houses every month. I hasten to use the term ‘jumble sale’ as only one small section of it is designated to jumble. The rest of it is all sectioned up like a department store, from handbags, to books, ladies’ nearly new, shoes, sports and outdoors, curtains and drapery, menswear, kitchenware, haberdashery, toys…. you name it, there’s nothing you can’t buy (seriously)! Here are some people in the art section, choosing some new prints and paintings for their homes (lots of people donate their own artwork some of which isn’t bad). The nicer ones are kept inside the outbuilding, the lesser value stuff is all outside (just as well really, given the British weather).

And here’s the haberdashary section (albeit a smaller one than usual because of the weather) where I picked up some little knitting patterns (20p each) and two rather nice Debbie Bliss books (40p each). This is where I bought my bargain Rowan Kidsilk Haze a few months back.

In the summer months you can barely see the stand from here as the place is so crawling with people. I think the cold temperatures made a lot of people stay at home this time.

At this point I stopped taking pictures as my fingers had literally frozen solid from the cold and not even my daddy’s gloves could warm them up again. And the tea cabin was closed as the pipes had frozen up which meant that a coffee and gingernut were out of the question, so we all decided that it was time for us to head back too. So we huddled our prized purchases into our chests and shuffled back through the mist for warm cups of tea at home.

It’s nice to start as you mean to go on, and 2009 has certainly started off on a happy footing. It’s been busy, busy, busy for the most part, but busy in a thoroughly enjoyable way- I hope it continues like this, I like to be happily occupied. Much of the time has been spent continuing to catch up with friends and family, and when that happens there’s usually lots of tea involved. I like a good cup of tea. And so do my family and friends.

First we had tea at the farm shop owned by The Queen, on the Windsor Farm Estate, just outside the walls of the castle (in the out in the countryside bit toward Windsor Great Park, not in the actual town).

We discovered this place last summer and it’s become a firm favourite ever since. Ever since emigrating to California last September, I’ve been thoroughly looking forward to coming back here in the winter to see how it was going to look all dressed up for Christmas. In actual fact it wasn’t really dressed up at all but they had put a huge marquee up in the courtyard to house all the extra things. It was still very nice though. The shop itself always feels very cosy and British, and is the sort of place that makes me want to wear my Barbour jacket. I’ll probably want to come here each time I visit home, I think. It’s that sort of place.

Practically everything in there is produced on home soil, much of which comes from the various Royal Estates like the apple juice which is from Sandringham, and they try to source things as locally as possible too. This is by no means a new thing, contrary to much opinion the Royals have always been impressively forward thinking.

A couple of days later we went round for afternoon tea with some old university friends of mine. Clotted cream scones, cakes, biscuits and hot buttered teacakes. Perfect.

It was a particularly exciting occasion as in addition to being able to share our news with a couple of people who didn’t yet know, we also got to meet two new additions to the group. This lovely three-and-a-half week old chap belongs to the lovely lady above- who would blame her for not looking at the camera when she has a nice baby to look at instead It seems that practically ALL of my friends are having babies at the moment- it must be that time in life!

I also got to see a long lost friend from Indonesia for the the first time in 10 years which was just the icing on the cake.

And then came the start of a new Sister’s Tradition in our household. Because over the last couple of years we have so much enjoyed getting together for afternoon tea, firstly at The Ritz for my wedding and then at The Lanesborough for my sister’s, we decided that we should make a habit of it but not have to wait for a special excuse. So as a treat to ourselves, and to take advantage of us all being in the same country at the same time, we took ourselves off to Brown’s in London for afternoon tea there and had a thoroughly nice sisterly time. It was delightfully genteel and the perfect setting to spend some rare quality time with just the three of us. We already can’t wait until the next occasion. Ultimately we want to ‘do’ tea all over London and come up with our own definitive guide at the end of it. We think Claridge’s might be the place where we get our next hit, whenever that might be.

Unfortunately I forgot to take any pictures during the tea itself, but I did manage to get a snapshot of the Christmas lights on Bond Street.

Here’s getting 2009 off to a very good start so far. I have another couple of weeks left here in England before I head back toward San Francisco. DrMrNin flew back yesterday leaving me to indulge in a bit more time on my own with my family as next time I’m back in the country, I might have another little person tagging along keeping me even more busy than I am now!

Autumn leaves can be nothing but a BIG FAT YES, but flip flops and bright, bright sunshine??? NOOOOOOO!!!! I can’t handle it, I’m not used to it, it’s never featured in my life before.

Autumn in England is one of the prettiest and my all time favourite time of year…

There’s a chill in the air, the smell of damp straw in the weeks after harvest, slight mists that come over the hills and the light is slowly fading to a wintertime dim glow.

The countryside is at its most spectacular.

I took the photos above about 6 weeks ago, in the final few weeks before I emigrated. By now the leaves on the trees will have turned brilliant shades of ochre and brown creating the most amazing display of nature. Having lived in this area for almost all my life, it’s hard not to love the outdoors, especially around this time of year.

But since moving to California, my senses have had a battering. Here we live much more in an urban setting and in the place of my beloved forests of trees there are instead jungles of asphalt and concrete. And what with us being a lot more equatorward, my damp misty mornings have been replaced by blazing hot sunshine with not an ounce of rain in sight. For the past couple of weeks (the last seven days especially), I have been yearning to get back out into the natural world, so I suggested to DrMrNin this weekend that we investigate the local hiking trails. A quick glance at the map revealed a nearby county park, so we jumped in the car and off we went…

And came upon possibly the UGLIEST LAKE I HAVE EVER SEEN. This photo does not do it justice, it makes it look too pretty.

I already knew that coming from one of the prettiest areas in the United Kingdom finding somewhere even half as nice would be a tall order, but is this really the best that the country park could do?

It was slightly prettier looking up toward the other end, but only slightly. Again, it looks far more interesting in the photograph, but in real life the colour of the water was a bit more of a putrid green.

There was no way that this could be a highlight of the park, so insisted we drove on for another 20 minutes where we happened upon a hiking trail. “AHA” I thought, “there must be something at the end of this, it must lead SOMEWHERE”. So we parked, and walked uphill, and about 15 minutes later we were still walking uphil, and another ten minutes after that we were still walking uphill (bad choice of a trail..)

And eventually the path became flatter and the trees opened out to reveal….

The UGLIEST pond I have ever seen.

Maybe my expectations were too high? Maybe this will turn into something pretty when the rainy season eventually comes?

But on the plus side…

THE LEAVES WERE TURNING!

Here in California it *IS* possible to find signs of autumn after all! And that made me very happy and not mind the ugly lakes after all

So it turns out that this morning my ever-talented sister made the front page of Etsy! Thanks Kalurah for letting us know Of course I emailed Malph straight away to find out if she’d heard the news (which she hadn’t) but suddenly it all made sense why she had had to spend the whole day replying to message after message in her Etsy mail about all her pretty things. Clearly making the front page on Etsy is like striking gold in terms of attention seeking. Let’s just say that she’s got a busy couple of weeks ahead

All of this reminded me of the time that we went out a few weeks ago to have a try at taking some as-nice-as-we-could-get publicity photos for her little web shop. We had such a lovely time, driving all over the local English countryside finding nice backdrops. We ended up on a little village high up on the Berkshire Downs where we played around in a pretty farmyard complete with tractors, geese and even the odd donkey or two. We had such a nice time and the great thing about it being a photo day was that I have all the nice pictures to remember it by.

Here are some of the photos we managed to take (during the rain-free moments). If you’re interested to see more of her things, you can visit her shop (in GB £) or click on any of the pictures to be taken directly to her Etsy store (in US $). She also ships worldwide Shameless plug, I know, but what are sisters with blogs for?

“Congratulations, your visa has been approved.
You are now officially a permanent resident of the United States.”

It’s been just over a week now since my visa was verbally issued, in fact a week to the day since there was a knock at the door and a courier delivered the actual visa into my sticky hands. And now that a week has gone by, it’s given me time to settle into the life changing event that is about to happen. To be perfectly honest, last weekend I was a bit of a mess. Although I’d been waiting an entire year for this whole permission to emigrate thing to happen, it suddenly became very real and for three whole days, no make that *four* whole days I felt completely and utterly sick. On the Sunday, it was all too much to cope with- I stayed in bed that morning until about 11.30am, only to return to it at around 4.30pm where I stayed for the rest of the day. It seemed like the best option. It even showed up in my horseriding lesson early in the week too- I just couldn’t focus properly. But here we are a whole week later, and once again I am fine, and once again I’m starting to look forward to it.

The US Embassy in London

So my big day last Friday all started with a 5.30am wakeup call- for once I didn’t mind it this time. A quick stop in the bathroom and a quick change of clothes later and I was hitching a ride with Young Father down to the train station, ready to catch the 6.15am express to London. It was a very calm and relaxed journey, so unlike the days when I used to commute to the city during rush hour, all the time fighting to get a seat, and hoping and praying that someone would open a window to get some fresh air in as the airconditioning was always far from adequate. But at this time in the morning, I had my choice of seats from a practically empty carriage and and had a thoroughly nice time looking out of the window as we went. Everything looked perfectly pretty in the early morning sun. There was also a little mist over the river that morning, and I made a point to note that I really should get up with the birds one day in the next few weeks and head out at daybreak to take some photos. Definitely something I want to put in my memory book.

I got to Paddington bang on time which meant that there was enough time for them to grab a coffee from Starbucks. I had my usual (a venti-decaf-one-shot-whole-milk-latte) but I had to send it back twice. OK, it’s not the easiest of orders to get right and I usually have to send it back every now and again, but to get it wrong two times? The first I got was a caffeinated TRIPLE shot (hmm, no), and the second time they poured the espresso too early and so the whole thing was…well, I won’t go into that now, but I *will* make a post when we’re back in California about the art of espresso. There’s more to it than you might think….says the ex coffee-master-barista

So third time lucky and I got the right beverage, and eventually I made it onto the bus bound for the embassy. Rush hour was just starting, but the traffic wasn’t too bad. The bus turned around Admiralty Arch at the top of Hyde Park and onto Oxford Street and I gingerly made my way down the stairs, being careful not to spill the coffee that had required oh so much effort to get. The bus stopped, I got off, and then a five minute walk later and I was at Grosvenor Square where the embassy was located. Last time I had been here was a couple of years ago, not long after 9/11 and the whole place was heaving with police and security; roadblocks were in place all around the square and big screens were up around the building although they may also have been doing construction at the time. Today however, the area hummed to a much more peaceful tone and cars and taxis were skirting the square like they used to.

By this time it was 8am. My interview was scheduled for 8.30am so I was there in good time. As I walked out the little park in the square that had also reopened to the public since I was here last time it became evident that security was still tight however, unbelievably tight. Policemen with guns everywhere, and the occasional dog. This portion of the street was still blocked off- it had been pedestrianised in fact, and right in the middle was a security setup very similar to that which you encounter when you first go to the airport and check your bags in for an American flight. There was a little podium, staffed by two or three agents, and then zig-zag lines and zig-zag lines of those seat-belt type barriers leading up to a (what I presumed to be bullet-proof) glass portico. The role of these agents was to check our official appointment letters and passports and make sure we were on the list of people to be admitted to the embassy that day. They also instructed me to remove my belt and put it in my bag as we would have to walk through metal detectors before we got into the building. I was then sent to join the line of people zig-zagging through the barriers. Compared to me, most people didn’t have much documentation with them- here was I with a big heavy concertina file containing every single piece of correspondence and duplicates of every single official document ever relating to me, and they just had little slip wallets with a couple of bits of paper. For a moment I thought that I was laughably overprepared but then it appeared that they mostly had a different appointment letter to mine- the one that I had received was all black and white, whereas they mostly had letters with paragraphs of red ink on them. They were all just here for regular visas. A little note here- there was no shelter for any of the people standing in line, so had it been raining we would have had no choice but to get wet.

The glass security portico in front of the embassy building

After about 20-25 minutes of standing in this line (yay for my coffee!) I reached the front, directly oppossite the portico. I then had to walk forward to another checkpoint and again show my passport and appointment letter to another security guard, who sent me off to the side to join another queue, this time inside the barriered area, just in front of the portico doors. For the past half hour I had seen a lot of people enter the portico, and a lot of people sent back out again as they hadn’t passed the screening. They had written in the letters and had also posted it on signs outside that abolutely no electronic or data storage devices were allowed inside the embassy- no cameras, no ipods, no mobile phones, no PDAs, no memory sticks. And by ‘no electronic devices’, they also included ‘no remote control car keys’ and this is where a lot of people were getting caught out. With no left luggage facilities on offer, these people had to walk about 1/2 a mile away to the nearest place that would store items for them (the security guards had lists of storage places, the nearest of which was a pharmacy that charged £10 per item). Fortunately I’m a stickler for details and was aware of their restrictions and had packed my bag accordingly, so with one quick x-ray of my bag and a stroll through the metal detector I was quickly on my way out of the portico, past the rifle-wielding policemen and was rounding the corner of the building to the steps of the main entrance.

The stairs to the main entrance of the US Embassy

By this time it was 8.45am (15 minutes after my scheduled appointment) but I wasn’t concerned as I had read a report previously on an immigration forum that they allocate the same time to a whole block of people and once you were inside the building it didn’t matter. Sure enough when I went through the doors and up to reception, the girl behind the desk asked “Visa or immigration?” to which I replied “Immigration” and she gave me ticket with “5009” printed on it. I then turned left and went up the stairs, opened the door and entered into a giant hall filled with chairs and people, with hundreds of eyes all watching the TV screens hanging from the ceiling to see when their number would be called. Years ago I had been here with my dad when he had had to get a plain old tourist visa to visit the US and it hadn’t changed one bit- except that the screens were now flat-panel LCD. Aside from this, it all still looked very 1960s. All down the left side of the room were big glass windows looking out to the square below. Because this hall was also eastward-facing, they had tried to filter out as much of the blaring sun as they could with blinds, and had installed giant floor fans to keep the air moving. So depending on where you sat you were either frying under glass, or searching around for a coat to withstand the windtunnel blast of chilly air from the fans. At the far end of the room was a small tuckshop selling drinks and snacks, and at the rear end was the counter for the courier service that they used to deliver your visa-stamped passport back to you. On the right side of the room were windows/booths numbered 1-11 with various people hunched over talking through glass to embassy people, often speaking so loudly that you could eavesdrop on their conversations if you were in a chair nearby. Booths 12-25 were situated just around the corner, down a little corridor past the loos where there was no waiting area and it was much quieter and more private. There were also a couple of computers where you could fill in and print out applications for non-immigrant visas.

As I had walked in (8.45am) they were serving ticket #5003 so I had a bit of time to wait. They had divided people into categories according to which visa type they were applying for- Immigrant visas were all in the 5000s, non-immigrants were all in the 1000s, and “E” visas were all in the 2000s. They also gave an indication as to how many people were waiting in each category at any given time. When I walked in there were seven other immigrants, 48 non-immigrants and four “E” visas. There was also a category for Department of Homeland Security, except there weren’t any applicants for that on this occasion.

Over the next hour, they ploughed through a load of the 1000 tickets, but the 5000s weren’t moving very much. This made me a little nervous as the time between each 5000 ticket was about half an hour- what on earth were they asking?? Suddenly the pint of coffee that I had consumed the hour before had worked its way through my system, and combined with the nerves I was up and down from my seat literally every ten minutes. I started reading my book but it began to get exciting and I was worried that I would become so absorbed in the story that I would miss hearing my number, so I went into the little corridor by the loos and started looking at the paintings by American artists that they’d hung up there. They had also posted little informative posters next to each one so it was an excellent way to pass the time. Eventually 5007 and 5008 were called over the loud speakerr so I psyched myself up for being called in about half an hour, and made another trip to the loo. But yes, you can guess what happened….I had to quickly dash out again, run to the computer screen to check that my ears weren’t decieving me, and then trot down to the far end of the hall to booth #1. It was now 10.15am.

The lady behind the glass counter seemed flustered, and apologised profusely that things were taking so long. Apparently their computer system had been down that morning and they were going to try to speed things along. I handed over my passport and she disappeared off to retrieve my file. I was actually amazed at how their seemingly primitive system worked- my documents were all there! She took my ticket, stuck the number on the back of my passport, and stuck something else on my file, and then went through all the documents that it contained, checking each one at every stage. It was rather an odd feeling seeing everything that I had sent to them, and also seeing things with DrMrNin’s handwriting on them that he had sent in from his end that I hadn’t seen before. His handwriting was in England but he wasn’t. Odd. Anyway, all my documents were fine and they didn’t need to see any of the duplicates that I had taken along with me just in case. She then took an electronic scan of my fingerprints on both hands and handed back a whole stack of the various passport photos that I had had to submit at various stages throughout the process and he told me to “pick one, any one”. Included in the stack was the infamous two inch square mugshot but instead I chose a regular passport photo that I’d had taken last summer when my hair was a better colour (hehehe). I was half expecting her to return it as it was the wrong shape, but hey ho she didn’t and instead gave me a pink form that I would need to use for the courier service at the very very end, and also a GIANT yellow envelope with my name in GIANT writing across it containing my chest x-ray. She told me I need to take this on the plane with me to give to border control when I arrive in the US. So 10 minutes after my number was called, that was it for the first stage and she told me to take another seat and listen out for my number again so I would know when to go for my interview.

The pink form that I had been given to fill in also had written on it instructions about the next stage, warning me that I could be in for another couple of hours of waiting around. It also warned sternly that if I missed the call for my interview, I would have to go home and wait for another letter inviting me to the embassy and do the whole thing all over again. So after I’d filled out my address I skipped off the loo one more time so that I could get myself settled in comfortably and be able to give my full attention to the screens (this time my number would be called out of sequence, so it was imperative that I should concentrate). Surely the coffee was almost through by now??! But yes, you guessed it my number was called the instant I locked the door, so I had to dash out again almost sending a small child flying in the process, glance at the screen to find out where I was supposed to be, and find my way around to window #16.

Behind the glass sat a *very* nice man. He greeted me, scanned my finger, asked when we had got married and then congratulated me as we’d just had our anniversary. I also pointed out that I’d just had my birthday and he congratulated me for that too. He then looked at my form, commented on where DrMrNin worked, asked what he did there and then asked me if we would continue to be living in the same place. Turns out he was completely familiar with the area and DrMrNin’s workplace as he had once lived in the same city and in fact knew *exactly* where our apartment was. Small world! He asked how we’d met and I gave him the nerdy grad school story and he inquired as to what sort of career path I wanted to take after the move and if I had good contacts I could make use of out there. It was all very chatty, more conversational about a common talking point than anything else, not like an interview at all. And then he smiled and said “Well congratulations, your visa has been approved and you’re now an official permanent resident of the United States“. Ahh, music to my ears! And THAT WAS IT. He then took a couple of minutes to explain that I was getting a “CR-1″ which stands for “Conditional Residence” as we’ve been married for less than four years, and so because of that my residence permit is valid for two years, and 90 days before it expires I have to apply for adjustment of status. But the Greencard I get (the work permit portion of the visa) is valid for a lifetime, but I have to renew it every ten years, unless I choose to become a US citizen which I can do after seven years. From here all that was left to do then was to take my pink form to the courier desk at the back of the big hall and pay £19 for the shipping service (I got the £4 upgrade to have them deliver it before 12pm) and be on my way.

By 10.45am on Friday 15th August 2008, I was out of the building, officially a permanent resident of the United States!

Thereafter was an afternoon of celebrating with my favourite things. I wasn’t hugely hungry for lunch as I’d spent the morning nibbling though a bag of mixed nuts and feasting on jellybabies, so I went to the Waitrose foodhall underneath John Lewis (the same place where Mutti and I had bought our piggy lemon drizzle cake) and bought some big juicy green grapes, and one of those flat peaches that look like squahed bottoms that Melissa has raved so much about in the past. I’m not normally a peach person (wouldyoubelieve!) but I have to agree that these were quite tasty. I also wore my nice new swanky sunglasses that my kind husband treated me to as a celebratory present, but moving swiftly on….

After this came a wander down Bond Street looking in the windows of the posh shops full of things I can’t afford, followed by a stop for tea at MY FAVOURITE MACAROON SHOP IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD!

Ladurée macaroons are THE BEST

Have you ever heard of Ladurée? They are a Parisian patisserie and HOMYGOD THEIR MACAROONS ARE TO DIE FOR. Their website is also super pretty and well worth a look. Oh just imagine to be able to go to their shop in Paris, I would be in macaroon heaven…..

The Ladurée café in the Burlington Arcade

I discovered Ladurée macaroons after I had had my medical the other week so my stop here for tea was entirely planned. OK, so this particular cafe is just two tables outside the shop, but the macaroons are completely worth it (have I made my point?!) and the setting is just completely perfect. There are only two Ladurée shops in London, one of which is in Harrods, and then there’s this one in the Burlington Arcade, a little covered colonade of shops which is the EPITOME of elegance. It’s soooo lovely inside. Let me see if there’s a picture…

Yes, here’s one:

And here are a couple more too…(click to enlarge)

Photos by George P. Landow

See? Pretty!

Sadly there is no Ladurée in San Francisco, but I am not alone in wondering and there seems to be an online discussion about where to buy comparable substitutes in the city, SQUEEE I can’t wait to sample them

Afterwards my afternoon of elegance and treats continued and I ended up spending a very happy couple of hours wandering around Fortnum and Mason which would easily be my very most beloved and favourite shop in the whole wide universe. Imagine the quality, luxury and excellence of Williams Sonoma, now imagine it being completely made over my Martha Stewart so it contains even more of only the VERY FINEST things, multiply that by SQUILLION and make it on five floors selling everything from bath towels to garden trugs and then you’ve just about got Fortnum and Mason. Hey, I’m in the mood for showing photos that aren’t my own today, so thi is what I mean.

This is the main part of the ground floor, here they sell mainly tea, biscuits, chocolates and preserves:

And here’s another part where they sell flowers:

Fortnums is reason alone to want to go to London. A reason I like it so much is that despite the elegance and grandeur, it’s not at all revoltingly ostentatious, it’s welcoming to all, and the prices are surprisingly not unreasonable given the level and status of the store. It’s certainly not at the cheap end of the scale and I most definitely wouldn’t choose to shop there for day-to-day goods, but it’s absolutely possible to pick up beautiful things there that make excellent gifts. In fact that’s what I do fairly regularly, and the quality is just outstanding. And who could resist a present from Fortnums?

A quick trip downstairs to the main food hall to get a small bottle of Fortnums pink champagne and it was finally time to go home.

All in all a thoroughly pleasing and successful day. More importantly, AMERICA HERE I COME!

In lieu of a hen night just before my wedding last year (that’s what we call a bachelorette party; men have stag do-s), my sisters took me out to Tea At The Ritz and it was such a lovely success that we decided to turn pre-marital afternoon tea into a little Sisters’ Tradition. So what with my big sister’s wedding now imminent, it was time again yesterday to don our glad rags and hit London Town for a spot of gentile entertainment. This time we went to The Lanesborough at Hyde Park Corner.

We started the afternoon all meeting up at Harrods and going inside to stroke the luxury handbags (swoooon) before making our way up toward Piccadilly and the hotel. However this was not before we made my sister close her eyes, only allowing her to open them again after we’d finished ‘decorating’ her with nasty, tacky hen night paraphernalia. What’s a hen party without all of that?!

She looked absolutely dreadful. We also showered her with pink heart confetti and we felt so guilty afterwards for making a mess in the street that we actually got down on our hands and knees and started trying to clear it all up again. Let it go on record that confetti isn’t the easiest thing to pick up, neither is it very hygienic. Eeuuw, my hands came into contact with a London road We couldn’t manage to get it all, but it was biodegradable so we don’t feel entirely bad.

My poor sister looked so chavvy and awful that we actually only allowed her to wear the sash for about 10 minutes before we confiscated it from her and hid it from sight. She was allowed to wear the veil though, and although the badge was in equally poor taste as the sash it was a bit more subtle and we weren’t ashamed to be seen walking next to her when she wore it. Obviously she removed everything when we went into The Lanesborough.

We chose our venue on the basis that it was this year’s winner of the highest accolade in the afternoon tea industry - The Tea Guild’s Top London Afternoon Tea 2008 Award. Here’s what they say about it:

This prestigious event is the ‘Michelin Star’ of the tea world and is a much sought after honour with most of London’s world famous London hotels competing for the title … Judges inspecting The Lanesborough were impressed by the exceptional service and the warm welcome guests receiving from the staff. The Afternoon Tea experience should be one of style, comfort and fun, and this coupled with The Lanesborough’s winning combination of elegant ambience, excellent variety of wonderful teas brewed and served with perfection, plus a delicious selection of food including the hotel’s ‘signature dish’ of lemon curd, left the judges in no doubt that The Lanesborough was the ultimate.

After reading this, it had a LOT to live up to.

Tea was served inside in the restaurant that had a glass roof, and we had an excellent table on a raised platform in the corner from which we could look out and survey all of the other tea-drinkers.

We chose the ‘Belgravia Tea’ which started with strawberries and cream and a flute of Tattinger champagne.

And then came the sandwiches, petit fours and pastries, and then hot buttered toasted teacakes and warm scones. Afternoon tea is not afternoon tea without scones, jam and clotted cream. They also gave us their signature lemon curd, which was nice except we all agreed that mine is much better. I’ll maybe get around to putting the recipe on here one day.

The tea was lovely, but what really made it were the comedy errors, hee hee! First our server managed to topple a whole glass of champagne down herself and the corner of the table as she was serving us, and then she somehow managed to bring us completely the wrong tea. We found it all rather amusing, but nevertheless we were served the rest of the afternoon tea personally by the tea sommelier who was a little embarrassed by the whole thing. Oops!

This is what I wore. It was my third outfit of the day. I’d originally gone to London in one outfit (skinny white jeans and a blue sweater) and changed into a pretty flowery short sleeved version of the Verity Hope Dress that my sister had given me (worn on top of my white jeans), but at the last minute decided that I wanted to wear a pink gingham party dress that I’d picked up that morning at a vintage shop in Portobello Road, near Notting Hill. It seemed like the perfect occasion for it! So I did a quick change in the Harrods loo.

I’m glad I wore it. And I’m glad I bought it too.

After tea, we all went off to Selfridges to stroke more luxury handbags. In addition to Blythes and shoes, they’re the other thing I lust after Oh yes, here’s another thing that made it special- we saw a gentleman on his way back from the office wearing a bowler hat. That’s not something you see every day, well not since the 1950s anywhoo.

The dress, the tea and all the handbag stroking all made for an excellent daytrip in their own right, but the bowler hat really put the cherry on the cake for a traditionally english afternoon out in London.

PS there are a couple more photos in the gallery below….

A couple of days ago it was my birthday, hooray! We usually always have a special outing planned and this year was no exception. And I allowed myself to open one of my presents before we went

Squee! A DOLLY

We then jumped in the car and drove to Highclere Castle in Hampshire. Of course I had to take the new girl with me please meet Avril LaBean.

It was a wet day for the most part, but I think that added to the atmosphere of the place. I think this is the best weather that Summer can muster this year. Here’s how Highclere looked for most of the afternoon. Grey skied, but rather nice in an imposing sort of way.

It might remind you of the Houses of Parliament in London (where Big Ben is), but that’s because it was designed by the same person. Highclere is the ancestral country home of the Earls of Carnarvon, the 5th Earl being the same Earl of Carnarvon who purloined unearthed the contents of Tutankamun’s tomb, and various other ancient Egyptian artefacts (that’s the british spelling, btw).

There’s actually a small museum in the basement ‘proudly’ displaying various relics from other shrines and lesser tombs including a sarcophagus that was discovered by the man, having been undisturbed for thousands of years complete with wreaths of cornflowers surrounding it in situ in the tomb in Egypt. Not only does the specially built tomb now lie empty, with the cornflower wreaths no longer there either, but the coffin was opened, and the poor mummy inside was unwrapped completely and the bands of cloth that carefully wrapped her up for all that time are now draped next to the coffin. As for the poor girl herself, there was a photograph of her next to the sarcophagus and she’s now probably in a drawer somewhere. So much for a ritual burial.

Outside the weather cleared for a bit and we were able to enjoy the pretty gardens. The lavendar was out. I love lavendar, it’s one of my favourites, I’m going to plant it all around the garden when DrMr and I have a place of our own. I like how when you brush past it it manages to fill the air.

All the pretty summer flowers were out too….dripping in the rain, alas, but again it added to the charm.

But then the rain came down and we had to run under a tree for shelter. It was a good opportunity to all squeeze together for a family portrait though. This is definitely one for the memory album.

All in all, a lovely day out. And my birthday girl enjoyed herself too. We actually timed our journey home well, as the rain got heavier as we drove back. By the end of the trip it was POURING outside.

And my poor little bean *really* didn’t want to get out of the car.

But I managed to talk her around in the end. Besides, she wanted to meet the contents of the other birthday parcels.

More dollies Meet Clemency and Winona.

And then we had cake. Following the ‘events‘ of my girly pink cake with fluffy pink buttercream frosting, I decided to avoid doing a sandwich, so I played it safe and made a traybake instead, a yummy wholemeal cake with fluffy yellow vanilla buttercream frosting and white chocolate buttons on the top.

Why wholemeal? Well it’s healthy of course, and when something is healthy, it means that you can eat LOTS of it without feeling guilty

I’m actually rather partial to wholemeal cake in general, as it has a lot more substance and bite to it, and isn’t so sweet. It really is delicious. It’s possibly one of my favourite cakes. Wholemeal flour is great for coffee cake too. A real savoury treat.

All in all a very lovely and delicious birthday celebration:D

(Hopefully tomorrow night there will be another cause for celebration too – it’s already too late, so I’ll catch up with my 365 then too…)

*******

PS A lot of people come to Peachy Hollow looking for a buttercream frosting recipe, so here is how I make it, it is actually very simple to make, with very simple ingredients:

Take 6 oz soft butter and 12 oz icing sugar (that’s about enough for a single layer 8-9″ round cake, so adjust accordingly in those proportions), and beat together with a hand mixer until very light and fluffy. The longer you whip it, the fluffier it becomes, and the fluffier it gets, the less sickly sweet it tastes. You can also add a splash of vanilla essence or lemon juice to zazzle it up a bit too if you like.

See? Easy! Enjoy, and happy baking!!
xo

As I type this, the rain is lashing down against my window, and intermittent flashes of lightning are illuminating the night sky outside. This downpour has been wanting to happen for days and I’m relieved that it’s finaly come; hopefully by tomorrow it will be less humid.

On Saturday the weather was really rather damp and hot and as tempting as it was to be lethargic, we went out to a garden centre for a change of scene. I’m really not into going to the shops these days, I have far more fun playing around outside. Joyce came with me because she wanted to look at the bedding plants.

Joyce is very into gardening and knows all the different Latin names of all the different plants. She is going to be an extremely useful person to have around when we buy a house of our own in California. I may even leave the whole of the garden planning to her. Now that’s a jolly good idea actually!

I also discovered Breezehouses.

Should I ever I get rich or win the lottery or something, I am SOOO getting one of these for the garden. This photo doesn’t do it justice at all. Their website is much better. Unfortunately they’re about the same price as a small car …hence the prerequisite of me being rich before I get one.

Sunday was a day of play and I drove out to a lovely country pub and met some good friends for lunch.

It was very exciting because I found out that my friends are expecting a boy, squee! This means that I get to go out and buy some nice blue Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino and start work on some booties before the arrival at the end of November, even more squeee!

The pub was lovely, I’m going to miss this sort of thing when I’m away but I’ll be able to come back and visit. We even had a famous person on the table next to ours…. Carol Decker from 80′s pop band T’Pau. She was drinking tea at one point, so it was hard to avoid round after round of rather bad “China in your hand” jokes. Thankfully I don’t think she heard us, hehehe.

Ahh Scottish Highland pics, Scottish Highland pics, they *are* on their way. What with all the hard work that my computer’s been doing over the last few days shifting files all over the place, it’s been a litle bit busy. I think it feels a bit overworked too as last night just as I was clearing even more stuff onto my hardrive, the fans were whirring away and then suddenly there was a small <<POP>> and my power cable stopped working. Fortunately I have a spare otherwise it would have been about £50 to get a new one (yikes!).

The other reason for the delay is that my free time has been slightly distracted by a new crochet project: it’s going to be a dress.

Today we went to London as my sister wanted to look at fabrics and trimmings for the new dresses and aprons that she’s going to make. Because of this it wasn’t a typical London trip day as we headed away from our usual hangouts in the West End and ventured up to Goldhawk Road and the area around Shepherds Bush Market where there are some a-ma-zing fabric shops. There’s practically nothing you can’t get. Here’s the market bit, it’s kind of set under railway arches (Goldhawk Road was just like a normal London road, but with lots of fabric shops).

In all my years living/working in London, I’d never ventured out this way before as I simply didn’t have to so it was an interesting trip for me. Shepherds Bush Market was much cleaner and organised than I had expected- for some reason I thought it would be a bit more messy, more like Camden or Petticoat Lane.

Of course I didn’t go all the way to London without taking a girl with me… this time it was Jaime who wanted to come (she’s Cecily’s ‘biological’ sister and the girl who I adopted when we went to Brighton).

Sadly the damp weather meant that she spend most of the time asleep in my bag, but she did enjoy a nice afternoon cup of tea. After that we did manage to make it to the West End for a couple of hours in the end which made me pleased- a trip to London isn’t a proper trip to London unless it involves Selfridges

Also I decided on the way home that I wasn’t happy with the progress I was making with my new crochet. Since that photo was taken it had acquired three more rows of shells, but when I measured it my tension was all off making my intended size small into an accidental size large. So as soon as I stepped through the front door, I took a deep breath and unravelled three evening’s worth of work and it was done before I had time to think about it. Clearly unravelling my crochet projects is becoming a bit of a routine, but I’m actually relieved so now as like before, it means I can start it again with a smaller hook. I will no doubt be posting updates of my progress.

FedEx never fails to impress me. I was checking the tracking statistics of the immigration documents I sent on Friday and saw that within two hours of me sending it the package had already reached a central dispatch point, within five hours it was at the airport, the next morning it was in Memphis TN, and by the early hours of Sunday it had already reached San Francisco. Amazing! All of that special transport for my letter for £32 which in retrospect seems like good value. What amazes me even more though is that had it not been for the weekend, the letter would have been transported overnight, to be delivered before 10.30am the next day. WOW. My little letter, for £32. I wonder how much it would cost to FedEx myself in a big box? Cheaper than a plane ticket, I’ll bet.

Anyway, that’s just one of the reasons I’m pleased so far this week. The other is that DrMrNin is flying in on Saturday, and I’m beginning to get *REALLY* excited about that. He has to do a lot of work when he’s over here, but at least we’ll both be in the same country which will be nice.

The weekend was also very good. Great bargains on Saturday followed by a rather pleasant walk on Sunday. We found ourselves strolling into an area of the woods where we hadn’t been before and it was like being in a whole new world. Then we stumbled upon a mountain biking trail and watched the riders as they dared each other to whizz up and down the sides of the WWII bomb craters that dimple the countryside all over these parts. It looked like awesome fun. I was so mesmerised by their activity that I completely forgot to take any pictures, oh well.

Then we waded through bracken that was up to our shoulders which opened up to a clearing where we saw more foxgloves than I have ever seen in one place before (I remembered to get pictures of those!) And I of course had a sweet little girl to keep me company throughout, squee!

All in all it was a perfect Sunday to end a marvellous weekend. What a relief to be in high spirits again- if anyone were to ask me how I’m feeling right now, my answer would honestly and truthfully be “very good thankyou”

Yesterday afternoon I had both my parents all to myself. I’d woken up that morning with the urge to go for a nice walk to get some fresh air, and when I suggested this plan, they were game. My sister on the other hand wanted to stay in and watch the tennis, so it was just going to be Mutti, Young Father and me. I felt rather special!

One thing led to another and just after lunch we found ourselves in the car driving toward the open countryside, and before we knew it, we ended back up at ‘Netherfield’. We always love going there. It’s become a lot more popular since the film of course (that would be Pride and Prejudice), but there’s a lot more to see there now as a result. This time however, we didn’t find ourselves heading toward the house, but we instead walked away from it and went for a nice long amble around the park. Unlike most stately homes, there aren’t a lot of big formal gardens there, but it’s more of a working estate with farmland all around it.

The weather was glorious and the scenery was like something you’d see in a painting- fields as far as the eye could see, with gorgeous blue skies and fluffy clouds. We ended up coming up and over the fields, so the house loomed up rather majestically in front of us- it was all rather Darcy-on-his-way-to-Pemberly, hee!

It was a rather lovely end to the walk, made all the more lovely by the fact that there was of course a nice tea-room there at the house waiting for us. I always love a good bit of tea and cake, I do. Especially at the end of a walk.

All in all a most enjoyable day, and definitely one to be repeated

And the fun didn’t stop there either, for when we got home it was of course time for Rachael’s birthday party

This time at Chatsworth!

Yes, DrMr and I have been holidaying in the Peak District for the past couple of days, and naturally the Chatsworth Estate was at the top of the list for things to see. The other thing that was at the top of my list was buying a tart from Bakewell (Bakwell Tarts are a staple tradition in the world of British puddings and this is where they’re from), so we combined the two and actually stayed in Bakewell itself which is only just down the road from the house, wheeeee. Bakewell was pretty. Just like a town in the Peak District should be. Our cottage was just at the end of this row. You can just about see it if you squint and peer carefully…

Anyway, back to the house…
According to the guide books, Chatsworth House was Jane Austen’s inspiration for Pemberley, and indeed it was the very location they chose to use for the Keira Knightly version of the film (which is why there was that bust of Matthew MacFadyen in the sculpture gallery- the one that Cecily was looking at). In fact they say that Bakewell was the inspiration for Lampton (where Elizabeth Bennett stayed at the Inn with her Aunt and Uncle), so double wheeee in that case.

Chatsworth is considered to be one of the finest country houses in the whole of England, and it certainly didn’t fail to disappoint in its opulence. Here are just some of the rooms we saw (I say ‘some’ as it took us in total about three and a half hours to get around, the place was HUGE)…

The Cistene Chapel- like entrance hall:

Music Room (that violin on the door is a trompe d’oille painting, not a real one):

The State Bedroom (designed for the King to sleep in, even though he never actually came, but it was a great sign of status that one could even expect that the monarch might stay):

The lesser of the dining rooms…

Yes, it was certainly rather expensive. Oh yes, and here’s the staircase.

‘Grand’ I believe is what they were aiming for. But the thing is, for me it was all a bit too grand. To the extent that *whispers* I didn’t like it *shhh*. For me, it was all just a bit too wannabee and ostentatious. And it didn’t feel right either (I go a lot by feeling and instinct)- for some reason that I can’t put my finger on, it gave off not a very happy vibe, and I didn’t really like that. Perhaps it was because it just felt so un-cosy? But because of all of this, it also didn’t really feel like the way I had imagined Pemberley to be. It felt too much like Mr. Wickham and not enough like Mr. Darcy. Yes, that’s it.

Cecily was also a little disappointed as she’s dreamed about visiting Chatsworth all her little plastic life. She looked so forlorn at one point, and we weren’t even halfway around. Oh Cecily!

Nope, we were disappointed.

BUT after perusing a couple of books in the gift shop and ‘borrowing’ the neighbours’ internet connection, I happened to discover that the Pemberley of the BBC Pride and Prejudice (which we all know is the better version anyway) was Lyme Park, a big National Trust house just over on the other side of the Peak District, YIPPEEE! So the next day we went there instead. And ohmygoodness that did not disappoint.

Now THIS is Pemberley to me:

Now, far to the right of this picture is where Mr Darcy emerged through the trees after his swim, to the immediate right is the sunken garden bit where she bumps into him and they have that embarrassed conversation, and in front of those three arches is where the carriage was waiting for the Bennets to take them back to the Inn at Lampton. SQUEEE!!!

Cecily was quite giddy with excitement

Oooh ooh OOOH! And here are the stairs in the courtyard that Darcy ran down whilst putting his coat on to try to catch Eliza again before she left, and he made polite conversation with her Aunt and Uncle and invited her uncle to fish in his lake, sooo exciting!!!

It also felt like a much happier place and was much much nicer inside too (even though the interior wasn’t used in the series, that was at Sudbury Hall). But it seemed that the stewards inside were under strict instructions not to make any reference to P&P, as whenever I asked ANY of them to confirm if that bit of grass is where Colin Firth stood, they would always pretend not to hear, and start talking about something else, like the wooden floor being replaced in 1962 or whatever. Like I was interested in that, pah!

But back to Chatsworth. The whole place was just so huge that we didn’t manage to get round it all in one afternoon- it’s also known for its gardens, and some people go there purely for that, without setting foot in the house. So we upgraded our ticket to a ‘discovery pass’ which allowed us to come back another day to finish it all off. It was a wise move in the end as the gardens took another good few hours to get around, but this time I liked it all and it turned into one of our favourite days. This time Summer came with us (Cecily was so excited from the previous day that she wore herself out and had to rest).

Summer is very thorough, so we got to see everything. Her ‘father’ was very impressed with her map reading skills.

Her favourite bit of all though were the GIANT leafy things. This was a BIG story for her to tell her sisters about, tee hee!

Yes, I much preferred our day in the garden. And what better way to top it off than by having a cream tea?!

So Chatsworth, you may have been Austen’s Pemberley, but sadly you weren’t mine, but your gardens were nice, so thankyou for a lovely other day.

And Summer had a nice time too

Oh and you remember I mentioned that bit of baking that was second on the top of my list of things to do? Well, we got the Bakewell Tart in the end as well

(By the way, that’s not a very good picture of The Good Doctor’s new hair as I’d just forced him out of bed about ten minutes previously, I will try to find a better pic next time, hehe.)

It’s bluebell season again here in Southern England. I noticed them the other day coming back from my horseriding lesson and it’s delightful. The floor of the local woodland is a sea of purple and the perfume makes you feel quite heady with Spring. Usually at this time of year I’d go out with my friend (and riding instructor) for a nice woodland hack, but she’s about to pop her second sprog any second, literally, so our little routine got put on the shelf this year.

Not wanting to let this Glorious English Moment go by, I suggested to Malph that we pop out just after lunch for a sister outing to enjoy them. So we dressed up in frilly dresses, made up some flasks and popped out for a Frippery Tea. Why the frilly dresses? What else would ladies wear for a tea party in the bluebells?! And it wouldn’t be a Frippery Tea if we’d have worn jeans, tee hee!

And here’s what we went to see…

Pretty, aren’t they? I like them
