Day 144
Did I mention I have a lot of hair? It’s very fine, but there’s LOTS of it, so much so that hair salons always request that “next time could I PURLEASE mention it so that I can be scheduled for extra time?” After I shampoo and condition I usually let it dry on its own as fine hair is particularly susceptible to drying out easily and going into a frizzy flyaway mess. If I wash it in the early morning, it’s usually in the final stages of being dry by about 2 or 3 pm in the afternoon. Yes, washing and drying my hair is quite an undertaking and it’s usually planned *well* in advance.
Day 145
A sneaky shot taken in the loo during my sister’s wedding reception last Saturday. I was a bridesmaid and had a nice lady from M•A•C do my makeup and I did my hair myself, which is why by this late hour my face was still intact yet my hair looked like I’d been dragged through a bush backwards. I don’t usually wear this much eye (or brow) makeup but it was something that I was assured would look better in the formal photographs. I wish I had a picture of the back of my hair as I was surprisingly pleased with how it turned out- I did a french braid ‘chignon’, i.e. a french braid with the bottom bit tucked up behind and underneath the braid on the back of my head, and I had little red roses at the junctions between the different bits of hair in the braid (you follow??!). I’m sure there’s a photo somewhere, at least I hope there is. I’d lost sleep over what to do with my hair as it’s so difficult to manage…
Day 146
Far too early in the morning after the night before, but we’re on our way to Paris!
Day 147
We’re here!! A late afternoon break at Les Deux Magots in Saint Germain des Prés, one of the prettiest pavement cafés in Paris. And a glass of wine and crackers to celebrate a brand new bag purchase
Day 148
In the Hall of Mirrors, one of the grandest rooms at the handsome Palace of Versailles just outside Paris (the chateau where Marie Antoinette resided and where the Treaty ending the First World War was signed). The palace was absolutely stunning except our visit coincided with displays of modern art which replaced a lot of the beautiful antique furniture. In one of the rooms a giant priceless antique chandelier had been removed and in its place was hung a large inflatable lobster suspended from the ceiling by a bright red plastic chain. Nice. In the courtyard out front was an enormous representation of a miscellaneous balloon sculpture that resembled a dog turd. Even Nicer. I’ve never really been a fan of modern art but this took the biscuit.

Born to wear pretty dresses and Barbour jackets and skip through muddy English fields in a pair of Hunter wellies, Nin is now a 30-something British Ex-Pat living in the urban wilds of Silicon Valley in the San Francisco Bay Area. She likes cake and chocolate and is on a quest to find the perfect Stateside cream tea.

Yay! Love ‘em.
Also, the ring on your right hand in Day 145 is so pretty! =)
We went to Versailles about 8 years ago just after all that terrible flooding and windstorms had gone through. It was March and all of the sculptures around the gardens were still wrapped for protection. It looked like a Cristo installation outside. (plus there were big piles of brush everywhere being burnt around Marie Antoinette’s little house)
Scott HATED the lobster. he hated the whole thing.. i just kept laughing
Thanks, I wear my wedding and engagement rings on different hands, but wear them on the wrong sides- I wear my e-ring on my wedding finger. It’s to do with it becoming structurally impaired if I resize it and I don’t want to take that risk. It’s not a big deal for me but for some reason other people get irked by the fact that I wear it on the wrong finger (huh????)
I didn’t realise they had flooding there! I can imagine the windstorms though as they closed the gardens early because of the bad weather.
Emilie, Scott’s reaction was *exactly* mine. I hated it, and now I remember the stupid art instead of the pretty decor. And the Michael Jackson thing???!! Apparently that’s one of the largest single pieces of porcelain in the world
Aww, fun pics, but don’t tease - where’s a photo of that bag!?!
Do people really give you a hard time about what finger you wear your rings on?!? I don’t understand why people get so worked up about things like that. You’re the one who’s married to ProfDrMr, that’s all that matters! =)
To begin with they did. Less so now, but it still comes up occasionally. I got told that I “look engaged when [I] should look married”. Whatever. In continental Europe they wear it the other way around so I don’t think it really matters as it’s the ring that’s the symbol, and not which finger. I get more of a hard time about the fact that I didn’t change my name but I’m not ready to give that up just yet as I worked so hard to make it something out of it. I may not be exactly fulfilling my career goals right this minute, but it’s something I’m desperate to get back into when I’m settled in the US, so it’s significance is still very forefront to me. I’ve worked my whole life to be who I am.
We visited the Palace of Versailles in June 2000. It was beautiful. Except for that room that smelled like they peed on the walls.
Haha, I don’t remember that room!
I think there’s a pic of the bag in the next installment of 365 if memory serves, but I’m not allowed to upload any more pics until I’ve made more packing progress…
