This past week has seen a flurry of activity in the parental household, and quite naturally there have been times when tensions have run rather high. Yet so far we all seem to be managing to deal with it all in our own little ways. I, for one, retreat to my computer and absorb myself into the realms of cyberspace for a few hours each night, whereas my mum tends to hide herself away in the garden or bedroom and throw herself into her sock knitting. My dad has become very productive in his shed this past week (he makes model boats) and my sister has knocked out about two new dresses in a matter of days (she’s the one I told you about before, who is setting up her own business). SoonToBeMrNin is also coping very well too, expecially that this isn’t even his house, so he has the added pressure of having to interact on a daily basis with his family who aren’t his family. I think if it were the other way around, and I was staying with his relatives, trying to plan the wedding, I would be two small crying fits away from a mental home by now. But they always say that the pressure is the worst for the bride. I don’t cope well with stress anyway, I never have done, but I’ll save that story for another time.

I would imagine that as the days creep closer to next Saturday, I might find increasingly less time to post on here, but my lovely, wonderful, super kind and amazingly nice husband-to-be gave me my wedding present early- A VIDEO CAMERA, so I’ve started making a video diary. Who knows, maybe if I don’t have the time to write anything, I can start posting some diary entries instead. We shall see.

….what with the Angora Fire at Lake Tahoe of last month, and the recent flooding nearby to my parents’ home town where I am now, I’m beginning to perhaps think otherwise.

To say the weather in the UK has been odd since I got home the other week would be a bit of an understatement, for it has been VERY ODD. And not just since I got home either, it has been odd since practically the beginning of the year. British people just love to talk about the weather, we always have, it’s our thing, it’s a common talking point that brings us together. But this year, oh boy, people are having a complete FIELD DAY with their weather-talk. Believe me, once they start talking, they often do not stop. It’s almost as if weather-talk has taken overthis year from football talk as the way to bond with one’s fellow countrymen.

The other day, whilst waiting at the bus stop with my sister to go to London, a very nice old gentleman started talking to us about the recent deluge of rain that we’ve been having. “Of course, it’s not yet as bad as the flooding of 2003,” he said, “but it shouldn’t really be happening at this time of year. I’m telling you, it must be down to that Global Warming“. I think it’s great how the public are becoming so environmentally aware now, but I wish the media were as informed as the public would give them credit to be.

Here’s where I can put my “work” hat on, as it’s somewhat related to what I research:
Yes, we’re right now in a period of unprecendented climate change that is likely caused by the effects of human activity, but the changes in the weather patterns that we observe between two or three consecutive years are not the same as the long-term changes in the trend of Global Warming that are also talked about. ‘Climate’ that changes from one year to the next is more to do with known cycles of variability in ocean circulation that are well documented, such as the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, or the North Atlantic Oscillation, to name but a few. This year, we are in a period of La Niña, which is part of the ENSO phenomenon. In everday terms, this translates as abnormally cooler temperatures in the equatorial Pacific and this can have significant impacts on the weather elsewhere in the world. How? Well, cooler sea surface temperatures mean that there is less evaporation taking place over the Pacific, so A) the atmospheric water cyle is disrupted. Also, when water vapour condenses back to liquid during the precipitation cycle, latent heat energy is released in the process, which is rediscributed to the higher latitudes during atmospheric circulation. So if there’s less evaporation above the low-latitude Pacific Ocean, then B) there will be a change in the redistribution of energy from the Tropics to the Poles. So basically, what La Niña is doing is disrupting the global energy balance and so the weather system is going a bit funny. In our case, the energy imbalance has affected the atmospheric circulation over the British Isles, and we’re getting dumped with tonnes of water that should be raining elsewhere. You see? So it’s not necessarily Global Warming that is causing the weird weather, but the La Niña weather phenomenon. Of course just how much any Global Warming can affect the return period of La Niña is another quesiton, but for the most part, this odd weather is kind of normal, and we know that it happens whenever we have one of those La Niña years. I just wish the media were more informative with their Science speak, as if the public are as interested in the environment as they clearly seem to be, then it’s a shame not to given themmore of an informed opinion.

Speaking of the media hamming things up, they’ve been doing that a lot regarding the area by where my parents live. We were supposed to be completely inundated in a big surge a couple of days ago, but it never actually happened. Sure, we had flooding, but it’s nothing we couldn’t handle. The people who live down here by the river are VERY used to being under water every now and again. It usually happens at least a couple of times a year. Some people in the UK have it REALLY BADLY though, and they’re not used to it which makes it miserable.

This is a picture of one of the towns near where I am right now that was affected. The bridge marks the width of the river as it is supposed to be, and the orange safety ring marks the edge of the bank.

The flooding of the River Thames 5

People were taking it all in their stride really. You can see that fun and good humour had managed not to get washed away…..

Man reading a newspaper during the flooding of the River Thames (further away)

And we had a lot of fun splashing around in our Welly boots, hee hee!

Getting ready to play in the flooding of the River Thames

And what did SoonToBeMrNin make of it all, having just walked off a plane into a deluge of floodwater? Well, you can find that out by watching this video, hee hee!

….was FABULOUS! They took me out to afternoon tea at The Ritz, and I had no idea we were going until we got there. It was such a fun night- I’ve posted some of the main the pics on flickr.

The only information I was privy to before we left was that I had to wear something smart, and that we were going to be heading into London. It could have been to do anything really. I travelled up with my middle sister, Malph, on the train, and we met my bigger sister, Jeeyet, at Piccadilly Circus, where I was immediately donned with all that fancy paraphernalia (as seen previously) and showered with sparkley confetti in the middle of the busy street. We didn’t attract attention at all, I should add (I’m being extremely sarcastic here).

Yes, that wet stuff is the rain…it’s raining A LOT here at the moment, but more about that another time. It was really windy too, but I digress…..

We then wound our way in a circuitous fashion down Piccadilly, incorporating various red herrings along the way….we made a false stop to join a queue outside a kitschy restaurant chain called Garfunkles…stopped into a sushi place pretending to get a snack….crossed the road a couple of times, that sort of thing. I really had no idea where we were going. At all. At first I thought we might be going to a show, or to the ballet in Covent Garden, but that was in the wrong direction, then I thought we might be going to Fortnum and Mason (another fancy afternoon tea place), but that was closed when we walked past, and then when we walked past The Ritz, I thought that we might be going to the Met Bar, or that being told to dress up was all part of the ploy to trick me and we were in fact going to the Hard Rock café. But then, we turned back again, and they finally told me we would be going to TEA AT THE RITZ!!!!

I was SO excited. it’s always been somewhere that’s meant a lot to me since childhood as I have all these memories of when we used to go there on our London trips as it was near to where we used to catch the bus home. For some reason, we could never just walk past The Ritz like normal people, we always had to run through the colonage, dodging behind all the columns on the way down pretending that we were Cagney and Lacey on some really REALLY exciting police chase (so very 80s of us). Goodness knows what passers by must have thought, but to us it was completely normal. So this sign above the colonade aand the colonade itself ctually means rather a lot to me. It’s one of those places that really calls me when I’m away, and I get the urge that I really want to be there. I always did wonder what it would be like inside though, but it’s not the sort of hotel that you can just wander into without reason, and ‘reason’ would normally be a reservation. And if you were a man, you had to be wearing a jacket and tie.

Inside was all very grand indeed. It was glamorous, luxurious, opulent and extravagent, and everything and more that you could have imagined it to be. All the colours were pretty pinks and greens and golds, and there were vases everywhere of the most beautiful pink and white roses. It was entirely tasteful, and exuded old time elegance and comfort, not at all stuffy or pompous which it could have easily been. (You can see a bit of what it’s like in the photos on flickr).

We had the second sitting for tea- the first was in the morning, but our turn was at 6.30pm. They only two two sittings each day, which keeps it nice and relaxed as there’s no rush to hurry you out and clear the table for the next people. We started with a selection of finger sandwiches and bride rolls which turned out to be an endless supply as the waiters kept coming around with top ups. Then the tea came, and we also had scones, with jam and clotted cream. The final course was a selection of fancy cakes and pastries, but by that stage we were so full that we couldn’t manage to finish them all. As we had never been before, we were a little unsure of the order of events, and what with it being ‘afternoon tea’ we assumed that it would be over in probably two hours. Based on this, we raced through the sandwiches, and started knocking the tea back too. No wonder we were so full so quickly!!! We actually asked the waiter in the end, and I’ve never felt such gastric relief when he told us we had four hours, and not two.

We weren’t supposed to take photos during tea, but I manged to sneak this one in when nobody was looking. The tea room was actually smaller than i imagined it would be, and also more central in the hotel than I imagined it would be too.

As we were eating, a porter arrived with a special delivery of a Ritz Rose that my sisters had arranged for me. It was so beautiful! It’s a special breed, with ivory petals tipped with green and is unique to the hotel. It was over a metre in length, and came in the most gorgeous presentation box.

Incidentally, you will notice in the first picture that I was wearing some rather bright blue flip-flops on my feet, that weren’t Ritz attire AT ALL! Actually, i wouldn’t be a bit surprised if you didn’t notice, but a rather observant friend of mine *did* after I sent him the picture, and so below is pasted an email of the explanation as I can’t be bothered to type it all out again:

I *was* wearing some rather fetching peep toe black patent sling backs that I had purchased ESPECIALLY for the occasion (not the tea bit, as that was a surprise until we got there, but shoes to go with that dress, which I happened to decide to wear tonight this afternoon). Anyway, by the time we got to London it was POURING WITH RAIN, and because the shoes were open-toed, they decided to form little swimming pools for the rain water which made my feet slip and slide all over the place inside each shoe, which made the shoes flop off, which was a little risky as these shoes were 4″ high. So I got these jelly insole things to put inside them which happened to have a self adhesive backing, and they worked fabulously at keeping my shoes on….until we got outside again, and rain got in my shoes again, and melted the adhesive, so not only were my feet swimming around inside my shoes, but also were my little jelly “Party Feet” (that’s what they’re called) insoles too. So each time I took a step, it was kind of a slip-flap-sploosh-jellysquidge-slideandalmostbreakmyneck sort of action. And I was getting a blister in the process. So I went down Regent Street, and Gap was the third store I tried (and the last hope) and the only one that was still selling summer clothing, hence the aquisition of the rather chavvy gone-down-majorca-style flip flops. They’re rather ghastly, but at least I was able to walk. And when we got to The Ritz I put my then-dried-out rather fetching peep toe black patent sling backs back on and tottered happily off for tea.

So the flip flops were because of the weather.

Well, he did ask.

All in all it was a perfectly lovely evening out and I couldn’t have imagined a nicer way to spend an evening with my sisters. I think what made it especially lovely was that it was the first time in at least two years when it had just been us three sisters together. I still get to spend rather a lot of sister time with Malph, but ever since Jeeyet moved into her own place with her boyfriend, we rarely get to see her on her own these days. In fact, i think it’s been at least two years that I’ve seen her at all for sister time. But we all decided how nice it was to spend time together, and we all made a pledge to do a sister outing whenever we get the chance from now on. Nothing beats having sister time, and I’m glad we’re going to get to have it more often.

P.S. Remind me another time to tell you about the other amazingly nice bachelorette party that my friends in California threw for me. It right in the middle of my busy week, and was reason #2 for not being online lately. I will definitely get around to posting about that soon.

ROOOAAAARRGH!!!

Almost a full pearly white smile

Did I scare you? Did I make you jump? Did I make you want to run away and hide under the covers and cry for your mum? Hehehe, sorry, I didn’t mean to if I did, I’m a nice person really. I promise I am.

What’s that all about, you’re wondering? Well, last week I mentioned I had jumped aboard a quest train to achieve a full, bright, shiney white smile and had started to have all my ugly metal fillings replaced. Well, this is the result of phase two. Ain’t it purrrrdy?! See how different both sides now look? One side has a nice white line of teeth, fading into the back of my mouth in a pretty pearly white way, the other goes back into an UGLY DARK BLACK METAL VOID. If for some reason you’re really interested to see exactly which tooth I had done, you can see an annoted version of that same photo here, and if you want one last peek of the ugly metal blackness that will soon be no more, then you can see that here. One more week, and that should be spanking white too, I CAN’T WAIT!

Whilst I spent the day in London, raising a couple of glasses of champagne over a birthday lunch for my dear friend Torch who just turned ‘21′ again last week, and then raising a couple more glasses to celebrate his and Martin’s recent engagement, and then a couple more to celebrate my upcoming wedding which is now just TWO WEEKS AWAY, I also raised a glass to my good friend back in California, Sandra, whose birthday it is today. Actually by this stage in the evening (I was keeping with Pacific time) it was a glass of water, followed by a mug of rather strong milky tea, then about six other glasses of water. But the point is, Sandra, I really did raise a glass for you to wish you a happy, happy birthday!

What made this particular birthday extra special for her is that it coincided with the release of a certain book, and let’s just say that she is a completely die hard, I mean DIE HARD Harry Potter fan. Don’t get me wrong, she’s not crazy DIE HARD, she wasn’t one of these people who camped out for days on end just to be first in line, but she was certainly in a book store line by the end of last night, credit card at the ready, waiting for midnight for the doors to open. That counts as pretty dang DIE HARD in my opinion. Her eagerness must have been catching too as her husband FilmChris, and the usual gang (SoonToBeMrNin, C2 and Natasha) were all in line with her. I’m sad I missed it all really, it sounded like it would have been a lot of fun. And I also missed out on a great big birthday meal last night too *sniff*.

So Sandra, if you’re reading this…I hope you’re having a wonderful birthday, hopefully chilling out with Obi, hopefully relaxing in the sunshine with a happy girly cocktail in hand, and hopefully reading your brand new copy of ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to be there, but I’m really looking forward to seeing you when you’re over here in a week and a half…maybe we can have another celebration then :o )

And if you were wondering, here she is herself in all her sultry gloriousness….

Happy Birthday Sandra!
I miss you!

Sultry Sandra

Oh by the way, Martin proposed to Torch at 07.07pm on 07.07.07. Seven is Torch’s lucky number. Isn’t that the sweetest little detail? I really can’t wait for their wedding already, it’s going to be awesome.
